Solving the problem of meaning once and for all

WARNING: to handle this substances you must have read the definition for meaning here

to be displayed in a room holding an undetermined number of identical 30ml amber-colored glass unlabelled bottles filled with tap water

WORKINGS: (remember: image = vehicle for experience)

it all started with an image: a bandage on a person’s heart

whenever there is a wound we put on a bandage
whenever we see a bandage we infer a wound
a bandage is a sign of healing, but
why just a bandage?
change the image of a ‘bandage’ for any other image and the heart won’t be ‘wounded’ anymore

each body part belongs to a semantic field
the tongue’s semantic field is speech and taste
the foot’s semantic field is standing and walking
a body part can also stand for some aspect of inner human life

combine a body-part with any image
fuse their semantic fields
chemistry with metaphors

‘apply’ an image to a person’s body
a cognitive talisman anchored in the body
a conceptual tattoo

each body-part can be given voice
each body-part can be awakened or put to sleep

drawing wings on a person’s heart is not the same as drawing them on their feet
drawing a cloud on a person’s forehead is not the same as drawing it on their belly

overlapping semantic fields = cognitive consonance/dissonance = message = indirect suggestion

our ink has to have a symbolic relevance
drawing a bird with saliva is not the same as drawing it with blood
drawing a tree with milk is not the same as drawing it with beer

meaning transforms one substance into another

as an idea
water can take any shape and occupy any space
water can shapeshift into any consistency
it has no color, no odor, no shape
which means it can easily be
affected

each time
we redefine water
we transform it
into another substance

physically, water stands for the ever-shifting nature of emotions:
lighter, shallower, deeper, darker

each time the word ‘water’ is pronounced
the phonemes utter a different emotion
which acts as a semantic field
that will be expanded
by the definition that accompanies it.

materials talk to our emotions

which language?
